HR Update on Right to Work Checks
What has changed?
The government now provides an online service to check the status of new employees’ right to work in the UK to help employers meet legal requirements.
What do I need to do?
- Where a new employee does not have a passport from the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, or other immigration documents from the Home Office, use the online tool found at: www.gov.uk/employee-immigration-employment-status
- Take a photocopy of the identification (ID) document, e.g. passport, and save on file in case of future reference. Please ensure the original form of ID is viewed (not a photocopy). Mark the photocopy with the date viewed and signature of the person checking the document.
